Exercise With Your Child: Fun Fitness Activities for the Whole Family

Welcome to National Wellness Month! As we kick off “Exercise With Your Child Week” from August 7th to 13th, it's the perfect time to prioritize your family's health and well-being. Engaging in physical activities together not only promotes fitness but also strengthens the bond between parents and children. It's an opportunity to connect, have fun, and instill in your little ones the importance of a healthy lifestyle. So, let's explore some enjoyable bodyweight workouts that parents and children can do together!

A Workout for the Whole Family

Working out with your child doesn't require fancy equipment or expensive gym memberships. In fact, you can do a fantastic workout right in the comfort of your own home. This bodyweight routine is designed to be accessible, challenging, and most importantly, enjoyable for both you and your child. Remember, safety and proper form are paramount, so adjust the exercises as needed to accommodate your child's age and abilities.

  • Warm-Up: Start with a 5-minute warm-up to get your muscles ready for action. Jog in place, perform jumping jacks, or try some gentle stretching exercises together.

  • Squat High-Fives: Stand facing your child, feet shoulder-width apart. Simultaneously squat down, keeping your back straight, and touch your hands to the floor. As you both stand back up, lift your opposite arms and give each other a high-five.

    • Repeat for 10-15 reps.

  • Animal Crawls: Get down on all fours and mimic different animal movements. Crawl like a bear, hop like a frog, or slither like a snake. Encourage your child to use their imagination and have fun exploring various animal movements for 5 minutes.

  • Plank Train: Start in a high plank position, facing each other. One at a time, take turns tapping your hands on your child's shoulder while maintaining a strong core and straight back. Challenge each other to see how many taps you can complete without losing form.

    • Aim for 10 taps each.

  • Crab Races: Sit on the floor with your knees bent and hands behind you, fingers pointing toward your feet. Lift your hips off the ground, forming a bridge, and begin "crab walking" backward. Race your child across the room, encouraging friendly competition and laughter.

    • Repeat for two laps.

  • Burpee Relay: Set up two markers, such as cones or pillows, a few feet apart. Stand behind the first marker and perform a burpee (squat down, kick your legs back, do a push-up or plank, jump back up, and repeat). Once you finish, run to the second marker and tag your child, who then performs their burpee. Continue this relay race for three rounds.

Exercising with your child is not only beneficial for their physical health but also for fostering a strong and healthy relationship. By engaging in these fun bodyweight workouts together, you create lasting memories while instilling positive, healthy habits. Hidden Gyms understands the importance of catering to clients of all ages, including kids. We even offer family sessions to promote wellness and togetherness. So, this National Wellness Month, embrace the opportunity to bond with your child through exercise and start building a foundation of health and happiness that will last a lifetime.

Remember, staying active and having fun go hand in hand!
